An innovative partnership to support cancer care in the East Midlands has been recognised with a prestigious industry award.

Volute Ltd, a leading Nottingham-based website and digital marketing business, teamed up with the East Midlands Cancer Alliance (EMCA), to design a new learning management system to transform nursing education and cancer care for people in the region.

The link-up has now seen the partnership win the 2024 East Midlands Chamber of Commerce award for ‘Excellence in Collaboration’, with the awards ceremony held in Nottingham in early November.

The new learning management system was developed for EMCA’s Aspirant Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist Development Programme, to offer cancer nurses unprecedented access to learn new skills and gain valuable expertise.

Volute director Tim Ryan said: “This partnership has brought together the best of the private sector, with the best of the public sector, to produce something that neither could do on their own. We are delighted to have been able to support cancer nurses in the vital work of advancing their knowledge and skills and ultimately improving the quality of care.”

There are approximately 26,000 new cancer cases diagnosed and 12,000 deaths from cancer each year in the East Midlands.

EMCA, a representative body supporting eight hospital trusts in the region, seeks to improve survival rates for people by ensuring we can detect cancer at the earliest opportunity. The organisation brings together teams from hospitals, cancer clinicians, GP practices, communities, commissioners and public health, to improve cancer care and treatment and improve the experience of care and cancer outcomes for our local communities.

Whereas previously, information and resources were spread around various systems and platforms, the Volute learning management system brings all this training information into one safe, secure and easy-to-use learning space. The free, high quality, interactive learning resources can be accessed conveniently at a time and location to suit the individual, via PC or mobile device.

Since its launch in October 2023, the learning management system has received more than 2,400 visitors, making more than 16,000 site views. The programme has received accreditation from the Continued Professional Development Certification Service. It has exceeded all targets and is helping provide a more positive future for cancer nursing care in the East Midlands.
