The first in a series of Quarterly Economic Briefings took place in January and was attended by representatives from local authorities, local enterprise partnerships, universities, Government and the private sector.

The Briefing was delivered on a virtual platform by the Midlands Engine Observatory which provides comprehensive and contemporary data, analysis and intelligence on the whole of the Midlands economy in order to inform regional and national level policy and projects.

Presentations included an introduction to the Midlands Engine provided by Chairman of the Midlands Engine Sir John Peace, and an overview of the national economic outlook from The Bank of England’s Glynn Jones.

We also heard from Chris White from the Executive Manufacturing Technology Centre and Midlands Engine Observatory Director, Professor Delma Dwight.

Professor Delma Dwight commented on the event:

Since its inception, the Midlands Engine Observatory has provided the region with a trusted source of data in an ever-changing economic landscape. These new quarterly briefings provide a live interactive forum to share directly with partners the latest intelligence in order to continue to inform our evidence base approach to decision making at the highest levels.

This first event forms part of a series to be held every quarter and designed to share with partners accurate and timely data analysis on the state of the regional economy.

The next Quarterly Economic Briefing is due to take place in April, with further Briefings planned for July and October 2021.
