Battery Energy Storage Systems in the Midlands – Energy Security White Paper case study

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) are essential to unlock the full potential of renewable energy by managing variations in renewable generation, storing surplus electricity and releasing it when there is a shortfall. This provides much needed balance and resilience to our electricity grid. Five large-scale BESS projects associated with 230MW are already operational in the Midlands with another 1.6+ GW of projects with planning permission.

H2GV Mids – Energy Security White Paper case study

he Energy Research Accelerator (ERA) is working to make hydrogen-powered heavy goods vehicles a reality on the UK’s roads. With the support of EDF, Midlands Engine and Cenex and working with Arcola Energy, Toyota, Intelligent Energy and ITM Motive, ERA led a feasibility study for a demonstration programme for a green hydrogen-fuelled 44-tonne truck in the Midlands.

East Midlands Freeport – Energy Security White Paper case study

The East Midlands Freeport was announced as a successful Freeport bid by the UK government in March 2021 and received formal government approval in March 2023. It is the UK’s only inland Freeport and features three strategically connected main sites: the East Midlands Airport and Gateway Industrial Cluster in Leicestershire; the Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station site in Nottinghamshire, and the East Midlands Intermodal Park in Derbyshire.
