Sir John Peace Centre FrameToday’s [23 January 2017] announcement underlines the Government’s commitment to the regions playing their full part in driving up growth and productivity. I welcome that. Britain often has great ideas, but too often others have made more of them, creating more jobs and generating more wealth, profit and other revenues. I agree that now is the time to start putting that right. I’m sure the focus on the importance of international trade, playing to our strengths and enabling new sectors in all parts of the country will deliver the high wage, high skill economy of the future.

The Midlands is well placed to benefit from this Industrial Strategy. We are working harder than ever together, to build our collective identity, to develop our competitive offer, to promote the Midlands to the world and to attract people to join us here – to invest, to trade, to study, to work, to live. Now is a great time to amplify the ability of the Midlands to contribute to UK plc and to champion our industrial, commercial, economic and cultural assets.

A strategy that enables the regions to use their assets to better effect will make for a more balanced UK economy. More of the wealth we create will be more widely shared. More people will have the opportunity to get good jobs, to make the most of their talents and to improve their personal circumstances.

I particularly welcome the Industrial Strategy’s focus on the value of making a significant investment in an overhaul of technical education, which could have a big impact on reducing the severe skills shortages many employers are facing today.

We look forward to engaging with the Government’s consultation process in the coming months.”
