The coronavirus pandemic has caused severe shockwaves across our region. Our universities are continuing to conduct research and develop initiatives to protect our citizens.

This includes an antibody test-launched by University of Birmingham spin-out The Binding Site, in collaboration with scientists from across Birmingham Health Partners (BHP). This will help to improve detection of antibodies, identifying patients where prompt medical intervention could help them avoid intensive care.

Meanwhile, experts from NuVision – based at MediCity in Nottingham – who designed new eyesight-saving technology are to launch more products which could speed up treatment while reducing the impact on hospital waiting lists and patient visits following COVID-19 restrictions.

And a new index which shows the business strengths of the East Midlands has been compiled by De Montfort University Leicester, Nottingham Trent University, University of Derby, East Midlands Chamber and media partner Reach Plc, using data from Companies House. This data could prove essential in supporting the region to build back better from the effects of the pandemic.
