The Midlands is the home of the UK’s largest cluster of MedTech companies, pumping £1.6bn into the UK economy each year. We continue to attract global companies to relocate through a distinctive NHS-partnering ecosystem, cutting-edge facilities and world-leading expertise, as well as 2 Life Science Opportunity Zones. Midlands MedTech and manufacturing capabilities underpin a host of nationally-leading Life Science innovation sectors.

The region boasts over 950 companies representing 24% of UK employment in the Medical Technologies sector, employing 22,500 people.

  • This includes highly successful business, testing and manufacturing support, via:
  • Medilink Midlands (a life science industry association)
  • The Academic Health Science Networks
  • The Centre for Healthcare Equipment & Technology Adoption (CHEATA)
  • The Medical Devices Testing and Evaluation Centre (MD-TEC)
  • The Medical Technologies Innovation Facility (MTIF).

We’re also home to world-leading academic, industrial and clinical expertise including:

  • Seven research-active Medical Schools with highly engaged partner NHS Trusts
  • Three NIHR Biomedical Research Centres
  • Six large Clinical Trials Units, University-NHS medical technology development units and a network of Science Parks (including the newly funded Birmingham Health Innovation Campus). This provides a natural testbed in a large, stable, ethnically-diverse population to take technologies from introduction into humans through clinical trials to uptake into care.

Other medical technology industrial capability is in the shape of a new £300M Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate, National NIHR-Ministry of Defence Trauma Research Centre, National Trauma NIHR Healthcare Technology Cooperative, NIHR Global Health Surgical Centre and the UK’s first Centre for Precision Spinal Rehabilitation.
